Bastions help soldiers to keep an eye on anyone approaching the fort. Why do bastions have small holes in them instead of normal windows?

If normal windows were used to keep an eye on the people approaching the fort, they will be able to see the soldiers who are keeping a watch. Having small holes on bastions will enable soldiers in the fort to keep an eye on the intruders without them knowing that they are being watched upon.
