Be and Al are made passive by HNO3.
When they comes into contact with nitric acid, an impervious layer of oxide is formed. This layer of aluminium oxide and beryllium oxide will prevent the nitric acid from coming into contact with the inner metal. Thus, this layer protects and prevents further reaction.
