Be, Mg and Ca are the elements of the 2nd group of the Modern Periodic Table having same valency and belongs to period 2, 3 and 4 respectively. Which one of these elements has the a) highest metallic nature b) least atomic radius c) maximum chemical reactivity. Justify the answer stating the reason for each.

  • The metallic properties increase from the right to left and from the top to bottom of the Periodic Table. Here, the Ca is bottom to all other two given. Therefore, Ca has the highest metallic nature.
  • Be has the least atomic radius because it has the least number of valence shells when compared with Mg and Ca, which have a higher number of electrons.
  • Ca has the highest chemical reactivity because it has the highest position in the reactivity series than the other two.
