Question

Beera wants to practice crop rotation in his field. Suggest a rabi crop and a kharif crop which will replenish his field with nitrogen. Which crop replenishes nitrogen and why?

  • Crop rotation is the practice of growing different crops alternetively on the same piece of land to replenish soil nutrients.
  • Wheat, pea, mustard are Rabi crops while paddy (rice),soyabean are Kharif crops.
  • Pea and soyabean are leguminous plants which replenish the field with nitrogen. Thus the farmer can use pea plant which is a Rabi crop and soyabean which is a Kharif crop.
  • Roots of leguminous plants contain Rhizobium bacterium which converts atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia which the plants can easily absorb.
  • Thus due to this nitrogen fixing property of Rhizobium bacterium present in leguminous plants soil nitrogen is replinished.
