- Wular lake is the largest freshwater lake in India. It is situated in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and it was formed due to tectonic activity.
- Examples of some of the important freshwater lakes in India are Barapani, Loktak, Nainital, Bhimtal and Dal lake.
- Freshwater lakes have glacial origins and most of them are situated in the Himalayan region.
- Chilika lake, and Pulicat lake are two largest brackish water lakes in India. Brackish means having more saline content than freshwater.
- Salt is produced from the water of Sambhar lake. This is a seasonal lake, which is located in the inland drainage.
- Sambhar Lake is situated in Rajasthan.
- Kolleru lake is the largest freshwater lake in Andhra Pradesh.
- Guru Gobind Sagar lake was formed when Bhakra Nangal dam was built for generating hydroelectric power. It is not a natural lake.
- Gobind Sagar Lake is a reservoir situated in Una and Bilaspur districts of Himachal Pradesh.
- Gobind Sagar Lake is named in honour of the tenth Sikh guru Guru Gobind Singh.
- Rana Pratap Sagar Dam is located in Rawatbhata in Rajasthan, built on the Chambal river.
- Nizam Sagar is a reservoir constructed across the tributary of Godavari river i.e. Manjira River. It is located in Telangana.
- Loktak lake is a freshwater located in Manipur.
- Barapani lake is located in Meghalaya.
- Bhimtal Lake is the largest lake in Nainital district, in the state of Uttarakhand. Nainital is also known as the ‘Lake district of India’.
- Nainital Lake is located in the Nainital district, Uttarakhand. This lake is also known as Naini Lake. It is one of the four lakes in the Kumaon Hills. The other three lakes in Kumaon hills are Naukuchiyatal Lake, Bhimtal lake, Sattal Lake.
- Nagarjuna Sagar dam is straddled across Nalgonda district in Telangana and Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. This dam is built across the Krishna river.
