Benedict's reagent consists of sodium carbonate, sodium citrate, and copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate. On heating the reducing sugar in the presence of alkaline Benedict's reagent it forms enediols which further reduces copper ions to form copper oxide which appears as a brick red precipitate.
