Question

benzene and toluene solution and benzene and CCl4 solution both are ideal in nature then how to explain the positive deviation of toluene and CCl4 solution?

Solution

A-B attractive force should be weaker than A-A and B-B attractive forces. 'A' and 'B' escape easily showing higher vapour pressure than the expected value. That is the attractive force between Toluene and CCl4 is weaker than Toluene-Toluene or CCl4-CCl4 solution. That is why the observed vapour pressure of the mixture is more than the expected one and it shows positive deviation.
