Question

Benzene, ethane and ethylene are just three of a large number of hydrocarbons-compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen. By using law of proportions and following data, the mass ratio of carbon in benzene, ethane and ethylene is a:b:c. Then calculate the value of a,b and c.

Solution

The correct option is A a=6, b=2, c=3a
According to given data, mass ratio of :
C:H
Benzene 4.61:0.39
= 12:1
Ethane 4:1
ethylene 6:1
So, mass ratio of C (w.r.t. H=1 g) in benzene, ethane and ethylene are 12:4:6=6:2:3.
