It is used for the preparation of simple as well as mixed ethers.
It involve an alcoholic sodium or potassium alkoxide that reacts with a primary haloalkane to produce ether.

Williamson's ether synthesis is a SN2 reaction. Here the alkoxide will act as nucleophile and attack the substrate from the back.
3o and 2o alkyl halide does not react efficiently with alkoxide to give the desired product due to the steric hindrance in the substrate.
