Question

Betty is at the arcade. It costs her 10 dollars to enter the arena.
Once she enters the arena, she can play as many games as she likes by paying 5 dollars for each game.
If she has a total of 50 dollars, how many games can she play?

Solution

The amount she would spend would be equal to the sum of the entry charges and the cost of playing the games.

Let the number of games she can play be represented by x.
Cost of each game = 5 dollars

Thus, the cost of the total number of games she can play = 5×x = 5x

Entry cost for the arena = 10 dollars

Thus, total amount = Entry cost + Cost of games she can play

Substituting the values, we can frame the equation as:
50=10+5x

50105=x

405=8=x

Hence, she can play 8 games.
