Two factors attributed to the decline of forest areas in Indian subcontinent from 1880 and 1920.
The British directly encouraged the cultivation of commercials crops like jute, wheat and cotton etc. and so, larger areas were brought under cultivation
The colonial state thought of forests to be unproductive. They therefore, brought forests under cultivation so that they yield crops and revenue. The areas under cultivation in the Indian subcontinent therefore, grew by over 6.7 million hectares whereas the forest cover diminished.
