HCl and HNO3 of equal concentration, then HCl is the stronger acid. This is because of the inherent property of HCl as a molecule to easily release hydrogen ion into solution than HNO3,( it is due to certain thermodynamic factors such as bond dissociation energy and hydration energy). Hence more is the activity of H+ in HCl than in HNO3, so more acidic is HCl than HNO3.
Both HNO3 and HCl are considered strong acids. Physical chemistry provides us with many ways in which we can quantify acidity. One such way is by measuring “pKa values”.
