Question

Between NaCl and CsCl, which has greater strength of ionic bond? Justify.

Solution

Strength of ionic bond:

1.Ionic bond is the electrostatic forces of attraction existing between cation and anion in an ionic compound.

2. Stength of ionic bond depends on charge and size of ion. For a Cation, higher charge and smaller size results in higher lattice energy which inturn results in stronger bond.

3.Since charges are same on Cs+and Na+, lattice energy depends on size , so, Na+ size is smaller compared to Cs+, the ionic bond in NaCl is stronger than CsCl.
