Between sodium and magnesium which can form chloride more easily and why?

Sodium has lower IP value than magnesium. Therefore sodium has greater tendency to lose one electron and form Na+ ion than magnesium which has to lose two electrons to form Mg+2 ion. As a result, sodium can form chlorides more easily than magnesium.
