Question

Bholu wants to grow plants inside his house but he does not like the mess soil makes. So, Bholu uses a technique called hydroponics. In this technique, plants are grown without soil and instead receive nutrients from mineral rich water that is made to flow over the plants roots as shown below. The water needs to be dissolved with chemicals containing plant nutrients such as containing nitrogen, potassium and zinc.

Choose the option that best depicts the relative amount of nutrients that needs to be added to the water. (A bigger circle means more amount and vice versa; if a circle is not present it means that the nutrient is not added ).

Solution

The correct option is C

Carbon, Oxygen and Hydrogen are needed in large quantities by the plant. But these three elements are obtained from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and water. Thus these are not added to the water solution.

The other nutrients are absorbed from the soil. These include Nitrogen (N), Potassium (K) and Phosphorous (P), zinc, magnesium, calcium, etc. The NPK nutrients are needed in comparatively larger quantities compared to elements such as zinc. NPK nutrients are called macronutrients for this reason. Nitrogen is needed to make proteins and phosphorous is a part of ATP. Thus, compared to Zinc, Nitrogen and Potassium is needed in a relatively large quantity. Hence option C is correct.
