Bhup and Leo get into a debate about which is better — Planning or Controlling? Both being tough and stick to their personal opinions and finally seek out mediation from you. While Bhup is a supporter of planning, Leo is a supporter of controlling.
(i) Whose views do you support? What would you counsel them?
(ii) How does one identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for a business?
(1) I support both Bhup's and Leo's views because planning and controlling are interlinked with each other aimed at achieving organisation goals. I would counsel them by explaining that :
(a) Planning is needed to determine the course of action which is evaluated at the end of the actions by controlling where the work should have been completed efficiently.
(b) Planning is a need for forecasting and preparing futuristic plans while controlling aims at making improvements for the future.
(ii) The planning function identifies potential threats for the business and determines suitable opportunities through research which in turn is used to develop plans. Alternatively, strengths and weaknesses are directly in control of the business and controlling function can be considered by establishing standards, comparing and measuring the performance, analyse deviations and rectifying them. These strengths and weaknesses can be weighed and rectified (during planning) by determining suitable opportunities and reducing/avoiding threats (during controlling).
