Sickle cell anaemia is a genetic disorder in which shape of RBCs is changed from biconcave to sickle cell and this leads to oxygen tension in the body. The amino acid valine at sixth position of beta globin chain is substituted to glutamic acid and this results in formation of defective haemoglobin which is unable to carry enough oxygen. This causes oxygen tension in the body and the red blood cells become elongated and curved resulting in sickle shaped.
