Question 24
Boojho and Paheli were eating their food hurriedly so that they could go out and play during the recess. Suddenly, Boojho started coughing violently. Think of the reasons why he was coughing and discuss with your friends.
The violent coughing of Boojho was an automatic reflex reaction that he exhibited as food particles must have accidentally entered into his windpipe.
We know that the oral cavity in human beings is connected to the openings of both, the windpipe and the food pipe present in the throat. The epiglottis serves as a flexible lid for the windpipe which closes only while swallowing, but remains upright at all other times. This way it prevents food particles and liquids from entering the larynx and trachea. When a person hurries with his meal, and is also engaged in talking, both the passages land up remaining open . The food swallowed easily enters the windpipe causing violent coughs as the tracheal muscles contract to evict the food particle out. In Boojho’s case, this is what must have happened.
