Solution

The correct option is B magnesium

Boron is placed in group IIIA of the periodic table. The valence shell configuration of group IIIA element is ns2np1. Therefore, these elements are pblock elements. The members of group IIIA are 5B (boron), 13Al (aluminum), 31Ga (gallium), 49In (indium) and 81Ti (thallium). As we move down in the group, the metallic character goes on increasing and m.p. goes on decreasing.

The boric anhydride thus obtained is mixed with sodium, potassium or magnesium powder and heated in a covered crucible so that it's reduced to boron.

B2O3+3Mg2B+3MgO

Amorphous silicon can be extracted when well-powdered quartz is mixed with magnesium powder and heated in a fire clay crucible along with the certain quantity of calcined magnesia (MgO).

SiO2+2MgSi+2MgO

Thus Boron and silicon can be best prepared by the reduction of their oxides by Magnesia
