Thomson in 1859, passed the electric current through the gas at low pressure filled in a discharge tube. High potential difference (5000 ~ 10000 V d.c) was applied across the electron, then rays are emitted from cathode and collide with the opposite wall. These rays were named as “cathode rays” by J.J.Thomson in 1897 after modifying the experiment.
Goldstein (1886) observed that a cathode ray tube generates a stream of positively charged particles that moves towards the cathode. These were called canal rays.
