Dear Student,
Three issues that pose a challenge to the idea of equality in a democracy are
1. Economic inequality: Widespread economic inequality can hamper the ability of people who are at the lower end of the income distribution from exercising their democratic rights. The rich can capture the democratic process by lobbying and contributing the financial resources of political parties. Democracy will then only serve the interests of the rich.
2. Social inequality like caste system: This can also prevent some groups of people from participating in the democratic process as equals. People of lower caste will be deprived of their rights as citizens of a democracy.
3. Widespread corruption also hinders equality for all in a democracy. The poor will not be served the state as only the rich will have the resources to participate in the corrupt political process.
Regards.
