Question

If sound is a longitudinal wave, then why are the terms - amplitude, wave length usedfor sound?

Open in App
Solution

Sound wave is a longitudinal wave because the oscillation of particle of the medium is in the direction of the wave propagation. The terms Amplitude, wavelength, frequency are the characteristic of a wave and these are associated with longitudinal wave as well as transverse wave. Hence these terms are also used to define the longitudinal wave.
