Question

Plants require nourishment to meet requirements of energy for their activities. Green plants are autotrophic and synthesize their food by the process of photosynthesis. It is a process in which plants utilize sunlight and chlorophyll to prepare food using carbon dioxide and water. After reading the above paragraph answer for each situation what happens to rate of photosynthesis? A. No rainfall in the area B. Good manuring in the area C. Cloudy day D. Stomata get blocked due to dust

Solution

Dear Student,

Rate of photosynthesis under the following conditions:

1) On cloudy day – Due to lack of light on cloudy day, the rate of photosynthesis decreases.

2) No rainfall in the area- Due to lack of water which is required by plants, the rate of photosynthesis decreases.

3) Good manuring in the area – If the soil has good amount of manure it becomes fertile. The good amount of humus is also made available to soil through manuring, then the soil is able to hold water which is required by plants. Thus, the rate of photosynthesis increases when good manuring is done.

4) Stomata get blocked due to dust- If the stomata present on the surface of leaves get blocked, the exchange of gases does not occur. So, carbon dioxide which is required by plants for performing photosynthesis is not made available to plants from surroundings. Thus, the rate of photosynthesis decreases when stomata get blocked due to dust.
