Question

Three blocks are initially placed seperately on a frictionless surface. Block A has mass m and initial velocity v to the right.Block B with mass m and block C with mass 4m are both initially at rest. All collisions are elastic. The final velocity of block A is ?

Solution

Since the collisions are elastic and the other two blocks are at rest the final velocity of the block A will be ZERO. Because in elastic collision whenever a moving body strikes with a body/bodies at rest it transfers all its energy to the body/bodies at rest.
