Question

Which of the following function of time represent (a)Periodic and non-periodic motion ? give the period for each case of periodic motion .[w is any positive constant] give reason also
(i) sin wt+cos wt (ii)sin wt + cos 2wt +sin 4wt (iii)e-wt (iv)log(wt)

Solution

(a) is a periodic motion. It is basically superposition of 2 SHM y= sinωt+cosωt =sinωt+sin(π2-ωt) =2sin(ωt+π2-ωt2) cos (ωt-π2+ωt2) =2sin(π4)cos(ωt-π4) so the periodicity is T=2πω with SHM angualr frequency ω (b) non peiodic an dit is superposition of 3 waves of different frequencies(c) is a function with a decay nature. These are called non-periodic Transcendental functions.(d)is a non periodic function .
