Cardiomyopathy is a disease that affects the heart muscle (myocardium). This condition reduces the efficiency of the heart to pump blood throughout the body.
Symptoms of cardiomyopathy include fatigue, palpitations, breathlessness, swelling feet, etc.
Different forms of cardiomyopathy:
There are two forms of cardiomyopathy- primary and secondary.
Primary cardiomyopathy only affects the heart muscle. This condition can be genetic, acquired, or a combination of both.
A few examples of primary cardiomyopathy are- hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which is characterized by the thickened heart muscle, dilated cardiomyopathy in which ventricles become dilated, and restrictive cardiomyopathy is represented by the stiffened heart muscle.
Among these, restricted cardiomyopathy is a rare condition.
Secondary cardiomyopathy damage heart muscle as a result of multi-organ diseases such as amyloidosis, haemochromatosis, sarcoidosis, etc.
