  1. The large intestine is part of the gastrointestinal tract.
  2. It is a long tube-like organ that has three parts viz. caecum, colon, rectum, and anus.

Digestion in the large intestine:

  1. Digestion is a process that converts complex food molecules into simple substances that can be absorbed.
  2. The process of digestion starts in the oral cavity and ends in the large intestine.
  3. The large intestine aids digestion by absorbing water and minerals.
  4. Many bacteria live in the large intestine; they play a vital role in digestion by breaking down fibres. These bacteria also produce vitamin B12 and vitamin K which are further absorbed in the large intestine.
