Lateral roots:

  1. Lateral roots are the smaller roots that emerge horizontally from the taproot or the main root.
  2. They are said to have an endogenous origin since they are produced from called pericycle. The pericycle is a thin layer of cells that is located between the vascular bundles and endodermis.
  3. The parenchyma cells present in the pericycle divide and give rise to lateral roots.
  4. Lateral roots play vital roles in water and mineral absorption. They also aid in anchoring the plant to the soil.
