What is the significance of amniotic fluid ?

Amniotic fluid:

  1. Amniotic fluid is a protective liquid filled in a sac which is known as the amniotic cavity.
  2. Amniotic membrane is made up of single layer of epithelial cells.
  3. Amniotic fluid is a clear, slightly yellowish liquid and it surrounds the unborn baby during pregnancy.

Functions of amniotic fluid:

  1. Amniotic fluid serves as a cushion for the fetus and it also protects the fetus from mechanical jerks.
  2. By maintaining pressure protects the fetus from damage.
  3. It also facilitates the exchange of water, nutrients and other biochemical products between mother and fetus.
  4. Amniotic fluid helps the baby to move in the womb which is important for bone growth and lung development.
