Garbage:-
The waste product of households like vegetable peel, spoiled food, etc. per day is called garbage.
Garbage management is the non-pollutant disposal of waste.
Important mechanisms of garbage management are:-
Recycling
Preparation of compost
Incineration
Landfill
(i) Recycling:-
Solid wastes like paper, plastics, metals, etc., are recycled is called recycling.
The waste paper is sent to paper mills where it is reprocessed to form new paper once again.
(ii) Composting:-
The process by which the remains of vegetables and animal wastes such as excreta of cattle, feces of human beings, etc., are decomposed in pits is known as composting.
The organic matter and nutrients are rich in the compost.
The compost can also be prepared by using earthworms to fasten the process of decomposition of remains of plants and animals.
(iii) Incineration:-
Incineration means reducing to ashes. The burning of a substance at a high temperature of more than to form ash is called incineration.
Incineration is used to destroy household waste, chemical waste, and biological waste like that from hospitals and reduces the volume of the waste through fermentation, pyrolysis process, etc.
(iv) Landfill:-
The disposal of wastes by putting them in low-lying areas of ground and covering them with the earth is called a landfill.
The disposal of waste materials or garbage can be used in the big landfill site.
