Briefly describe the structure of the reproductive organ of a plant.
Flowers are the reproductive organs of a plant (angiosperms).
Each flower has a stalk called the pedicel. The basal swollen portion of the flower is called the thalamus. The parts of the flower arranged in a ring form are called whorls.
Most flowers have four whorls. They are,
Calyx – It is the outermost whorl of a flower and consists of sepals as subunits.
Corolla – It consists of brightly coloured attractive petals as subunits. They help in pollination.
Androecium – It’s a male reproductive part of a flower, consists of stamens as subunits.
Gynoecium – It’s a female reproductive part of a flower, consists of carpels/pistils as subunits.
