Solution

The main similarities between the allegories of France and Germany were

1. Both allegories were female figures. In France, it was Marianne and in Germany, it was Germania.
2. Both allegories represented freedom. In France, Marianne leads the people of France towards liberty. In Germany, Germania holds a broken chain representing abolition of slavery.

They were similar because there was a tradition of using female figures to represent noble ideals like justice and freedom.

The strange aspect of using women figures to represent freedom was the life of ordinary women in Europe was not at all free. They had no legal rights and freedoms in European countries. All rights and privileges were reserved for males.
