The roots of India’s relation with Pakistan can be traced back to the midnight of 14th August, 1947 when the Partition of India took place and a new state of Pakistan was created.
After the partition, India and Pakistan witnessed terrible communal riots which caused enormous suffering and the problem of succession regarding civil, military and administrative division.
Apart from these issues, Kashmir has always been a bone of contention between these two countries over claim for its territory.
India and Pakistan have witnessed three major wars in the last 75 years.
The first war was in 1965 and the next was in 1971 which ended with the creation of Bangladesh from Pakistan.
The third war was fought in Kargil in 1999 and ended with a decisive Indian victory.
Peace agreements have been signed to ease tensions between the two countries:
The Nehru-Liaquat Pact of 1950 promised to protect the minorities in their respective countries.
The Tashkent Agreement was signed between India and Pakistan in 1966.
India and Pakistan also signed the Simla Agreement in 1972.
Various other efforts have been made to ease tensions between the two countries:
The Gujral Doctrine focussed on sincere problem-solving dialogues between India and Pakistan.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee tried to improve the relations by initiating the Lahore Bus diplomacy and the Agra Summit.
However, Pakistan continued to disregard the peace attempts made by India.
