Solution

Instructions: Start the answer by stating the objectives with which the league of nations was established.
The following points thereafter need to focus on the lack of unity amongst the members and lack of arms along with the absence of major powers from the league.

Solution: The League of Nations was formed with the objective of; keeping the peace, avoiding war and ensuring that international coordination was reached on economic and social matters in Europe.
But despite its peacekeeping agenda the league failed in preventing another war due to the following reasons:
  1. Major powers such as the USA, Soviet Russia and Germany were not part of the league. This limited the international scope of the organisation working on behalf of all member nations.
  2. The League did not have military powers and this acted as a challenge when dealing with hostile countries.
  3. Sanctions were not applied properly since the member states did not work together and formed separate pacts with aggressive countries, thereby making the presence of the League irrelevant.
