It is a campaign started in India with an aim to keep the roads, streets, and other infrastructures clean.
It was started on 2nd October 2014 to honor the vision of Mahatma Gandhi.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has two wings: rural and urban.
The rural wing has been established to eliminate open defecation by constructing household and community-owned toilets. The main aim of the rural wing was to achieve open defecation-free (ODF) India by 2nd October 2019. An accountable mechanism to monitor toilet use was also established.
The urban wing ensures the availability of toilets for each and every dwelling by building public and community toilets. The urban wing also takes care of sewage treatment plants. Regular sweeping, collection, and transportation of waste by municipalities is a vital part of the campaign.
An annual survey (Swachh Sarvekshan) is carried out to know the state of cleanliness and hygiene in cities and towns.
