Briefly explain the following term-diabetes insipidus.

Diabetes insipidus:-

  1. It is a disorder that is caused due to the deficiency or failure of secretion of Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH).
  2. In this disorder a large volume of dilute urine is produced (diuresis) that does not contain any sugar (like glucose).
  3. Dilute urine may go up to 30 liters per day.
  4. It is also called as drinker's disease because patient feels excessive thrust (Polydipsia) and drinks a large amount of water.

Symptoms:-

  1. Diuresis (production of large amount of dilute urine).
  2. Excessive thrust and drinking of excess water.
  3. Increased frequency of urination.

Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH):-

  1. It is synthesized by hypothalamus and temporarily stored and released by posterior pituitary.
  2. It is also called as vasopressin.
  3. Vasopressin means vasoconstriction.
