Reflex action:

  1. A reflex action is an immediate response to stimuli.
  2. This is an automatic reaction to a certain stimulus.
  3. The reflex arc mediates an action that is carried out.
  4. This is an involuntary movement that leads to voluntary activity.
  5. The sensory neuron transmits the impulse generated at the sensory receptors to the brain or spinal cord.
  6. The input is analyzed, and the motor neuron transmits the reaction to the effector organ.
  7. Examples:
  1. The pupil of the eye changes size as it is stimulated by light.
  2. When pierced by a pin, a jerky retreat of the hand or leg occurs.
  3. Coughing or sneezing as a result of nasal passage irritants.
  4. Knees jerk as a result of a hit or someone stamping on the leg.
