Briefly explain the powers of the President

Write briefly about the legislature, executive, defence, judicial and emergency powers of the President.

Solution:
President of India, has following power.
  • Legislative powers: The President has the power to nominate 12 members of Rajya Sabha. The President has power to dissolve or extend the term of Lok Sabha. The President also signs a Bill to make it a law or Act.
  • Executive Power: President appoints leader of the majority party as Prime Minister. And, on the advice of the Prime Minister, he/she appoints the Cabinet Ministers. On advice of the Prime Minister, the President appoints Judges of Supreme and High courts, Governors of State, Attorney General, Head of defences, ambassadors to foregin countries, etc.
  • Defence Power: President is the Head of the defence forces. He/she can declare war and make peace treaties with other countries.
  • Judicial Power: The President can reduce punishment of a person and can change the death sentence given to a person by a court.
  • Emergency Power: A president can declare an emergency in a State or the entire country in case of threat to its security due to war or internal conflict.
