Briefly explain the role of enzymes in the digestion of disaccharides.

In the small intestine, several disaccharidases are secreted that can act on the disaccharides, e.g: maltase breaks down maltose into two units of glucose, lactase breaks lactose into glucose and galactose and sucrase breaks down sucrose into glucose and fructose.
