A meteorite has both potential and kinetic energy before it arrives in the earth's atmosphere. As the meteorite enters the earth surface and moves towards the earth frictional heating starts up which is caused by collision of the molecules in the atmosphere thus reducing its velocity. Since its velocity is reduced the kinetic energy decreases which converts into heat energy. Thus kinetic energy is converted into heat energy.
