By drawing a neat and labelled diagram, describe the construction of a dry le-clanche cell.
Diagram of dry le-clanche cell:
Construction:
1. It consists of a zinc cylinder made of a thick plate.
2. This zinc cylinder is wrapped with a cardboard cylinder from the outside, so as to make its sides non-conducting.
3. Present day leak proof cells are provided with the tin casing, which is painted from the outer side, so that it makes non-conducting.
4. Aluminium chloride jelly is filled inside the zink cylinder.
5. The ammonium chloride jelly is prepared by mixing a minimum amount of water in the mixture of ammonium chloride and gelatin.
6. This jelly is always wet in the state.
7. A cylindrical cavity is left in the ammonium chloride jelly. This cavity is filled with cartridges.
8. The cartridge is prepared from the muslin bag, in the middle of which is fixed a carbon rod, provided with a brass cap.
9. The space around the carbon rod is filled with a mixture of magnesium dioxide and activated charcoal.
10. The cell is sealed from above by a porous seal.
