Question

By drawing a neat diagram, explain how a totally reflecting prism can be used as an erecting prism?

Open in App
Solution

  1. When the light rays strike the base of a totally reflecting prism parallelly, they suffer refraction from the face AB.
  2. After refraction from the AB, it strikes the face AC at an angle more than the critical angle of glass i.e. 42°.
  3. Therefore, it suffers total internal reflection.
  4. The refracted rays emerge out from the face BC and undergo refraction further.
  5. This results in the inversion of rays i.e. the inverted image YX appears as XY.
