Question

By taking a number of solutions, as in Arts. 3941, sketch the loci of the following equations :
1. 2x+3y=10 2. 4xy=7 3. x22ax+y2=0
4. x24ax+y2+3a2=0 5. y2=x 6. 3x=y29
7. x24+y29=1

Solution

1. 2x+3y=10
y=0x=5
A(5,0)
x=0y=103B(0,103)
Represents a straight line joining AB
2. 4xy=7
y=0x=74A(74,0)x=0y=7B(0,7)
Represents a straight line joining AB
3. x22ax+y2=0
x22ax+a2+y2=a2(xa)2+y2=a2
represents a circle with centre (a,0) and radius a
4. x24ax+y2+3a2=0
x24ax+4a24a2+y2+3a2=0(x2a)2+y2=a2
Represents a circle with centre (2a,0) and radius a
5. y2=x
Comparing with the general equation y2=4ax
a=14
Represents a parabola with focus (14,0) and vertex (0,0)
6. 3x=y29
2x=y29y2=3x+9y2=3(x+3)
Comparing with the general equation (yk)2=4a(xh)
4a=3a=34
Focus: (343,0)=(94,0)
Vertex: (03,0)=(3,0)
So the equation represents a parabola.
7. x24+y29=1
a=2,b=3
b>a
Clearly it represents an ellipse with y as major axis.
