The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is appointed by the President by consulting the outgoing Chief Justice. At the appropriate time, The Union Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs would seek the recommendation of the outgoing Chief Justice of India for the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India. The shortlisted names are recommended to the President by the Law Ministry.
