Sound can propagate through a medium such as air, water and solids as longitudinal waves and also as a transverse wave in solids.These waves are forms of energy. So both are correct. That is sound is wave and it possesses energy and it is also a form of energy. For example, when you hear a loud bass music in a home theater (Speaker) it will shake the windows of your room. That is due to the energy of sound.
