Solution

Mixture: If two or more substances are mixed together in any proportion such that they do not undergo any chemical change but retain their individual properties then the resulting mass is called a mixture.

Example: Air, salt solution, Sugar solution, etc.

Characteristics of mixtures:

  1. Variable composition: Constituents of the mixture can be present in any ratio because their amount is not a fixed ratio.
  2. Physical change: The constituents of the mixture do not bind together chemically. They are loosely held together and retain their individual properties.
  3. No specific properties: The properties of a mixture are the average of the properties of constituents.
  4. Homogeneity: A mixture can be homogenous or heterogenous.
  5. Energy change: No exchange of energy takes place during the formation of a mixture.
