Solution

1. A substance obtained by combining two or more pure substances in a definite ratio. – (b) Compound

When two or more elements react chemically, then a compound is formed. The elements are present in a fixed ratio in compounds. Examples of compounds are water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) etc.

2. Removing soluble solids from their solution in water. – (d) Evaporation

The process in which a liquid changes into gaseous state on gentle heating, such that liquid does not boil, is called evaporation. The process of evaporation is used to remove soluble solids from their solution in water. For example, mixture of Copper sulphate (CuSO4) and water are separated by the evaporation method.

3. Removing insoluble impurities from muddy water by allowing it to settle. – (e) Sedimentation

Sedimentation is a process by which heavier impurities present in liquid normally water settle down at the bottom of the container containing the mixture. For example, a mixture of sand and water is separated by sedimentation method.

4. A process from which pure water is obtained in Gulf countries. – (a) Distillation

Distillation is the process of separation of a liquid from a soluble salt solution by the evaporation of liquid and condensation of its vapours in another vessel. For example, pure water can be obtained from salt water by the process of distillation.

5. A device which is used to separate two immiscible liquids. – (c) Separating funnel

Immiscible liquids are the liquids which do not mix together and form separate layers. The separation of two immiscible liquids is based on the difference in their densities. The apparatus used for separation is a separating funnel. For example, mixture of oil and water can be separated by separating funnel.
