Question

C-O-H bond angle in alcohols is slightly less than the tetrahedral angle. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

The bond angle in alcohols is slightly less than the tetrahedral angle. This is due to the presence of lone pair of electrons on the oxygen atom. The presence of lone pair leads to lone pair lone pair repulsion, which leads to decrease in bond angle of C-O-H bond.
