Question

Calcium carbonate reacts with aqueous HCl to give CaCl2 and CO2 according to the reaction, CaCO3 + 2HCl --> CaCl2 + H2O

What mass of CaCO3 is required to react completely with 25mL of 0.75 HCl?

Solution

No. Of moles of HCL used = Mass× Volume÷1000= 0.75×25÷1000
=0.01875
=0.019
No.of moles of CaCO3 to react with HCL=1÷2 ×no.of moles of HCL
=1÷2×0.019÷1000
=9.5×10 to the power -3
Mass of CaCO3 = no. Of moles of CaCO3 × molar mass
= 9.5×10to the power -3 × 100
= 0.95 g
