Calcium Cyanamide - CaNCN, which is produced by the Nitrogen fixation reaction of heating CaC2 and N2 is black in colour.
Let us recall the cyanamide process:
CaC2 +N2 → CaCN2 + C
As you can see, there is some carbon produced as the product. This gives CaNCN a black colour. When hydrolyzed in soil, CaNCN yields ammonia. A simple version of the reaction may be understood as
CaCN2+3H2O→2NH3+CaCO3
In some interpretations, another reaction is also considered:
CaCN2 + 4H2O →Ca(OH)2 + CO2 +2NH3
